How to Prepare for Your Maternity Photoshoot: A Complete Guide for Expecting Moms
By Anjeza Dyrmishi Photography | Luxury Maternity Photographer in New Jersey & New York
Preparing for your maternity photoshoot is about so much more than choosing a beautiful dress. It's about celebrating one of the most meaningful moments of your life and creating timeless memories that you and your family will treasure for generations.
Whether this is your first baby or you're growing your family, it's completely normal to have questions before your session. Many of my clients tell me they feel excited but also a little nervous because they've never had professional portraits taken before.
The good news is that you don't need to know how to pose or have any modeling experience. My job is to guide you through every step so you feel confident, comfortable, and beautiful from beginning to end.
This guide will help you prepare for a relaxed, enjoyable maternity session and ensure your photographs are everything you've dreamed of.
Book Your Session at the Right Time
One of the most important parts of planning your maternity session is choosing the right time.
For most expecting mothers, I recommend scheduling your session between 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy. During this stage, your baby bump has a beautiful, well-defined shape while you still have the energy to comfortably move between poses and outfit changes.
If you're expecting twins or multiples, or if your pregnancy is considered high-risk, your doctor may recommend delivering earlier. In those cases, scheduling your session around 26 to 30 weeks is often the best choice.
Booking early also helps ensure you have more flexibility when choosing your preferred date, especially during busy seasons when studio availability becomes limited.
Choose Clothing That Makes You Feel Beautiful
One of the biggest questions I receive is:
"What should I wear?"
The answer is simple—wear something that makes you feel confident and comfortable.
At my studio, you'll have access to a carefully curated collection of luxury maternity gowns, elegant fabrics, bodysuits, and timeless dresses designed specifically for maternity photography. Every piece has been selected to flatter your growing bump while creating classic, artistic portraits that never go out of style.
To make your session even smoother, I recommend bringing:
Nude seamless underwear
A strapless bra
Neutral-colored undergarments
Simple jewelry
Any sentimental items you'd like to include
If your partner will be joining, neutral colors such as white, beige, black, or gray photograph beautifully and keep the attention on your connection as a family.
Prepare Your Skin and Hair
Your maternity session is the perfect opportunity to treat yourself.
In the days leading up to your appointment, drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated and glowing. Moisturize regularly and try to get a good night's sleep before your session.
Many clients choose professional hair and makeup, but it isn't required. If you decide to do your own makeup, keep it soft and natural. Timeless beauty always photographs best and ensures your images will still look elegant years from now.
Avoid trying a completely new hairstyle or makeup look right before your session. Choose something that feels like the best version of yourself.
Avoid Tight Clothing Before Your Session
This is a small detail that makes a big difference.
Try not to wear tight leggings, socks, bras, or elastic waistbands for a few hours before your appointment. Tight clothing can leave temporary marks on your skin that may be visible in your photographs.
Loose, comfortable clothing is the best choice before arriving at the studio.
Eat Before You Arrive
Many maternity sessions last between one and two hours, depending on your package and wardrobe changes.
I always recommend eating a light meal before arriving and bringing a bottle of water. Feeling comfortable and energized allows you to fully enjoy the experience and keeps your energy up throughout the session.
Include Your Partner and Children
Pregnancy is a family milestone, and including your loved ones often creates some of the most emotional photographs of the day.
Partners are welcome to participate in part of the session, and if you already have children, they can join as well.
Some of my favorite images are the quiet moments between parents, or an older sibling gently hugging mom's belly while waiting to meet their new baby.
These authentic interactions tell your family's story in a way that no posed photograph ever could.
Don't Worry About Posing
If you've ever thought,
"I'm not photogenic."
You're not alone.
Almost every client says the same thing before their session.
The truth is that you don't need to know how to pose.
Throughout your maternity session, I guide every movement, every pose, and every expression. I'll show you exactly where to place your hands, how to stand, and how to move naturally so your photographs feel elegant, relaxed, and authentic.
My goal is to make you feel comfortable from the moment you step into the studio.
Why Choose a Studio Maternity Session?
A professional studio offers an experience that simply can't be recreated outdoors.
Inside the studio, we never have to worry about changing weather, strong winds, crowded parks, or harsh sunlight. Every detail—from lighting to wardrobe and posing—is carefully controlled to create timeless portraits with a luxury feel.
Studio sessions also provide complete privacy, allowing you to feel relaxed and confident throughout your experience.
Relax and Enjoy the Experience
Your maternity photoshoot isn't just another appointment on your calendar.
It's a celebration.
It's a chance to slow down, appreciate everything your body has accomplished, and preserve this incredible chapter before it becomes a memory.
Many mothers tell me they arrive feeling nervous but leave saying it was one of the highlights of their pregnancy.
When you're relaxed and enjoying yourself, your confidence naturally shines through in every photograph.
Your Maternity Portraits Will Become Family Heirlooms
One day, your baby will grow up and look back at these photographs with wonder.
They'll see the excitement in your smile, the love between you and your partner, and the anticipation of the life you were waiting to meet.
These portraits become more than beautiful pictures—they become part of your family's history.
Years from now, they'll remind you not only of how you looked, but of how you felt during one of the most extraordinary seasons of your life.
